Old Tehri Palace - A Submerged Beauty - Story Behind the Palace

10:41:00 PM

Tehri was the old capital of Tehri Garhwal founded by Maharaja Sudarshan Shah. Most of the palaces here are in ruins, only parts remaining as testimony to those days of grandeur.
When the whole of Garhwal had come under the reign of the Nepal, the King of Tehri Sudarshan Shah fled to Dehradun and stayed for 14 years as an exile.

About this time the British army conquered Almora, capital of Kumaon. On 25th April 1815 the British recided to etend to hold towards western Garhwal. Taking the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers as natural boundaries. They wanted Rishikesh and Devprayag under their stay. This opportunity was seized by Maharaja Sudarshan Shah who joined 'The Raj' to free his kingdom from Nepal. Because of british support he could find hid capital at Tehri on the confluence of Bhilangana and Bhagirathi. With consent from the Governer General he took "Prasad" from the Mahant of Guru Ram Rai and Harsevak Das of Dehradun and come to Tehri to recite with his two queens in 1852. Tehri village was small but pituresque with the flat surface on its ridge. He constructed his palace here. According to Sri Buddhi Ballav Dyondi the capital Tehri was founded at 11 am on 30 december 1815.
30 small houses at first were constructed with the help of local masons and labourers. Later it grew with people constucting their own houses.
And now their houses have been shifted to - New Tehri town and the whole Tehri town is submerged underwater.
Various adventure and water sports are played here.
