This temple
is situated towards the south-east side of Pauri at a distance of 37 kms on the
main Pauri-Kotdwara road. The
Siddha-Peeth is located on the left bank of Nawalika. From the road side one
has to walk down hardly 350 metres to the temple site.
There is an
interesting story in the Skanda Purana in connection with the birth of river
‘Nawalika’. It is said that Maharishi Chyavan had an Ashram on Dudhatoli hills.
He is known for his miraculous medicines prepared from herbs and roots.
One learned
and rich woman from Paithinpur (Paithani) came to Rishi Chyavan for his
blessings and became his ardent devotee. During her meditation the rishi saw
that water was flowing through her body like a river. He transformed her into a
river and declared that the purity of the water would be as holy as the ganga
and would relieve people from the pains of birth and death. Since then, this
river has been called the ‘Nawalika’.
Hundreds of
people throng to this temple daily for it is believed that one’s wishes are
granted by the goddess of power. An oft-repeated tale goes like this: Daityaraj
Pulom’s daughter Sachi wanted to marry Devraj Indra. She prayed to Jwalapa Devi
who appeared to her in the form of ‘Diptiman Jwaleshwari, and her wish was
fulfilled.
Attached to
this popular temple is a residential school of Sanskrit for boys. It is
expected that this institute will produce many scholars and Pundits because of
its existing curriculum.
