This temple is situated towards the eastern side of
Rishikesh and 12 kilometers from Lakshman Jhula. The height of this place is
1550m above sea level and it is climatically extremely good. The view of Ganges
from here is breath-taking.
Neelkanth’s temple is located between the hills of Manikoot,
Vishnukoot and Brahmakoot:26 kms north east of Rishikesh by road and 11 kms
away on foot.
When Lord Shiva consumed the poison churned out of the ocean, he felt unbearably hot and came to this spot for relief. Here, he sat for the next 60,000 years meditating on the welfare of humanity. When his ‘tapasya’ concluded all the other gods began to worship him. Pleased, Shiva presented them with a boon that led them to victory over the Rakshashas(demons) who were forced to get rid of the ‘Rakshasyoni.’
The temple takes its name from the color of Shiva’s throat
which turned blue when he consumed the poison. A dip in the Sulphur-rich stream
nearby that lies between Garurchatti and Lakshmanjhula is meant to cure Skin
diseases. An unusual feature about this place is the inter twined growth of
trees at a particular spot. Three distinctly different varieties of leaves
appear to be growing out of the same tree.
Lakhs of people visit here daily on the day of Mahashivratri to worship him. On the day of Mahashivratri-2017, around 1,75,000 peole visited the temple to worship him which itself is a very huge record.
